What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a cosmetic treatment that involves applying a chemical solution to the skin to remove the outermost layers. This process aims to improve the appearance and texture of the skin by removing dead skin cells and promoting the growth of new, healthier skin cells. The strength of the chemical solution used in a peel can vary, depending on the desired results, and can range from a mild solution that only targets the outer layer of skin to a more potent solution that targets deeper layers of skin.

 

Recommended no of treatments:

Superficial Peels:

6-8 consecutive treatment (May be repeated monthly)

Should be repeated every 2-3 weeks, Skin must be fully healed.

 

Medium/deeper peels:

Every 4-6 weeks Skin must be healed.

What are some contraindications of a chemical peel?

  • Pregnant/ Breast feeding
  • Accutane or Proactive in last 6 months
  • Psoriasis, Eczema, Acne rosacea, Dermatitis, Allergy to aspirin (Salicylic acid)
  • Asthmatic (Inhaler dependent)
  • Retinol – Benzoyl Peroxide in last 24 hrs. (first time peel, stop 1 week prior)
  • Allergy to bleaching products.
  • Hemophiliac
  • Chemo or Radiation.

 

Pre-treatment

  • No waxing 2-3 weeks prior
  • No laser 24 hrs. prior
  • Stay out of the sun
  • No Harsh skin products (Retinol) or treatment 48 hrs. prior.

 

Post-treatment

  • After Care: 24-72 hrs. (Downtime depends on strength of peel)
  • No exercise (sweating)
  • No pools, hot tubs, Sauna, Tanning or infrared lights.
  • Don’t wash face until next morning (lukewarm water/ mild cleanser as skin will be sensitive)
  • No harsh chemicals that could react with peel.
  • Skin will peel 1-2 days after and can last up to 21 days depending on depth of peel.
  • Day 3-5 will be the worst, Do Not pick! Allow it to peel off on its own.
  • Dry, tight feeling is normal
  • Break out after is normal
  • Can return to skincare after 4-5 days
  • No direct sunlight for 7 days
  • Avoid make up until most of the peeling is done
  • Minimum of SPF30 % every day
